The company was established in 1876 by Anna and Melville Bissell, with the invention of a carpet sweeper. The sweeper’s success led to the creation of the first Bissell manufacturing plant in 1883, with Anna Bissell taking control of the company in 1889 and becoming America’s first female corporate CEO.
