In 1908 in Ohio, W. H. Hoover and an inventor started work on producing the vacuum cleaner. The Hoover company located to the UK in 1919 and, by the beginning of the 1930s, it had its first UK factory.

The company continued to thrive and its vacuum cleaners became so popular that many people today still refer to all vacuum cleaners as ‘hoovers’. Hoover also manufactures other goods including washing machines, cookers and refrigeration units.
